Molyneux wins Kawasaki's first ever sidecar TT
Manx sidecar specialist, Dave Molyneux, won the first sidecar race of the 2012 Isle of Man TT festival on Saturday 2 June, and in so doing delivered a first ever sidecar TT win for Kawasaki.
In a double celebration the 49 year old racing veteran also celebrated a personal triumph having now won a TT using engines from all Japanese manufacturers. For Kawasaki this was understandably the sweetest win and, under new rules, perhaps the most relevant as Racing Coordinator for Kawasaki Motors UK, Ross Burridge, explained;
“Dave was keen to use a Ninja ZX-6R engine this year as the rules have changed recently and require an engine that is very much in standard trim to be used. It was flattering that Dave thought the Kawasaki engine the strongest as standard and offering the best in terms of performance for such a long and gruelling race”.
Having topped the practice leader board earlier in the week – and recorded the only sub 20 minute lap of any sidecar competitor – Molyneux and passenger, Patrick Farrance, led the race away from the start at the TT grandstand and then proceeded to lead each of the three subsequent 37 ¾ mile laps.
Riding a self-crafted DMR sidecar outfit, Molyneux finished a commanding 22 seconds ahead of the next pair over the line and achieving an historic tally of 15 sidecar TT wins for the highly experienced local hero making him the third highest winner in TT records.
For passenger Farrance this was his inaugural win despite being on the racing scene for some time. His win was made all the sweeter having also become a father for the first time within the past fortnight.
“The engine got better lap by lap and on the last one it was absolutely singing. To be honest it was quite windy in some sections and the fairing was being pushed against my left hand. It's great to get to 15 TT wins and I am delighted to deliver Kawasaki their first win in this class”
